This was not how Gilbert wanted the day to go… in no way, in any reality did he think this was how the day was going to go. It had started out normal, getting up and eating breakfast with juice, check the sports pages for the outcomes of the games and horses he had bet on. He had almost expected to see the results, everything had lost. Crumbling up the paper and tossing it aside, he knew he would have to find some way to make the money back and quick. That was the problem with running into a gambling problem like he had. Gilbert knew he had a problem, there was just no way that he could find out of it, especially now that he owed people money. Getting up to head to his work at the tech store, he knew that he would have to look into extra shifts and perhaps a second job at this rate… along with a help group. He needed to get out of this habit, he needed to find a way to quite craving the rush. Honestly the rush was all that it was, the failure at the end was worse than the feeling of placing that bet. Even thinking about it now made his fingers twitch with the need to look at the computer, to scroll to the websites and see what was going on at the tracks and with the games. Sighing as he somehow kept himself from falling into the urge for the moment, he left his apartment and headed to work.
From there it was getting gas at the station, which had went as expected. Boring and uneventful. He paid by card at the pump and got back in after securing everything. Leaving in good time, he got to work early, but he stopped by the pet store nearby to look into getting an animal. Perhaps needing something else to take care of would help his habits? If he could focus his attention of something else, perhaps that would help him onto the road to recovery? He didn’t know if this was how it worked, but he was willing to try. It was here that things went wrong. Before he had walked into the store, two men came up to him and started hauling him off, one on either side of him, with a threat to not make a scene. The only two people Gilbert could think these were was the people who served under the loan shark, coming to collect the debt he owed. He resisted as much as he could by dragging his feet, but he knew it was in vain.
Reflecting back on how he had found himself in this room, this rather nice room didn’t really answer any questions. He had expected to be in a dingy room, dirty and with little light. After all, that’s how he met the shark. Was this something different? A different tactic? Sighing, Gilbert moved to rub his shoulder where one of the two men and gotten a little heavy handed when he was trying to drag his feet and just be a nuisance. Moving to look out of the window, the floor he was on was higher up. There was no escape for him this time. Would he get his knees broken? Wasn’t that how this worked? Laying his head against the cool window, he sighed again as he closed his eyes.
“What kind of mess did you get yourself in this time Rothstein…. You’re a mess and you need to get your life together.”
