Carriage rides were quite fun, but only at first. Mia had learned this fact to be true by the second day of traveling to the Hearts capital, and by the last day, she was quite ready to not set foot in a carriage for at least a few months. The only thing that had kept the ride interesting had been watching the scenery change as they traveled, seeing all the different towns and villages of her home country. Some towns looked similar to the one she had been born in, yet there were also so many that were far bigger and more impressive to look at. Between each area was beautiful landscapes, still mostly untouched by man. These suited her fancy best, and only served to strengthen her opinion that Hearts must be the finest of all the Kingdoms. Yet, even with so many things to watch go by, Mia found her thoughts drifting to who was waiting for her at the end of her journey.
Mathias.
She had not seen her older brother in years, far too many years for her liking. In all the time since he had left to join the guard, the only contact they’d shared had been through letters. But now everything was different. Mathias had become the Jack of Hearts, and with that position came more than enough liberty for him to send for his sister to live under his care in the castle. Mia couldn’t deny she’d be sad to leave her parents, she loved them both dearly, but she loved Mathias just as much, and it was high time she see him again. Not only that, but she could never turn down the opportunities that castle living would provide. To live comfortably and receive an education on par with those of a noble was nothing to sniff at. It would be a good life there, she would be happy.
Still, she wondered about how much Mathias had changed since she had last seen him all those years ago, for letters had never been able to tell her that. She liked to imagine he was still as cheery as ever, and small conversations with those escorting her seemed to support that notion, but what if something about him was different than she recalled? And what if she was too different? Sure, she hadn’t exactly grown much in terms of height over the years, but she had grown nonetheless, and surely her personality had had small changes over time. Moreover, she didn’t at all feel like she looked herself with her hair pinned up with flowers in a fashion her mother said made her look best, nor in a fine dress so deeply red she could only make guesses at what the fabric alone must cost. What if he scarcely recognized her? Or didn’t recognize her at all? No, that was silly thinking, she reasoned. He would know it was her.
Her musings were cut short when the carriage came to a stop one final time, in a location so lovely to her that she knew it must be the castle. A lingering moment of silence was all that she had before the carriage’s door was opened for her, and one of her escorts offered her a hand to help her out of it. Her blue eyes were quick to scan the area and take in every sight she could, as well as look for the smiling face of her dearest brother.

JACK OF THE KINGDOM OF HEARTS
Today was the day.
Well, every day was a day, but this one was special. Mathias little sister was coming to live with him and he was excited. He knew that she had been told he had asked for her now that he had a better position, was able to take care of more than just himself; and he didn't mind her thinking that. Truth was, their parents asked if she could stay with him, getting a better education than they could give her at home in the small village. And it would be a chance for her to grow beyond what she could by staying in one place. Once permission was granted, he sent for her and started getting her new rooms ready for her. Of course some of the things came out of his pay, but that didn't matter, he was glad to see his sister again, hopefully she recognized him and she was still sweet as she was when he left all those years ago.
Finally, the day arrived. It was hard to keep himself from pacing the length of the courtyard, but he was disciplined enough to do so; only the twitching of one of his hands told of his nerves. It had been a few days since the carriage left with its precious cargo, and it should be arriving anytime now. He had made sure that her room was prepared and everything else she needed for the moment was ready. He wondered really how much he had changed, besides the muscle mass. He knew the tattoo was new, but otherwise? What else would she find strange?
Smiling as the carriage came to a stop a bit in front of him, Mathias waited for her to see him. He wanted to impress her, show that he was still the brother she had always known.

It took only a short glance to spot Mathias’ familiar face among all her new surroundings, and only small steps to stand right in front of him; but if she looked up at him with wide eyes, well, it was only because she couldn’t contain her amazement that she was really seeing him again. He was tall like she remembered, that seemed to be the first thing she noted, though of course it wasn’t hard for someone to be tall compared to her. He still had that same face, just a bit older, but beyond that grin something about it was more... serious. Yes, that was the word Mia would use. Though, she chalked it up to years of serving in the guard; her brother had to become more serious in that line of work. But that smile was the same as she remembered; it was still the brightest and cheeriest smile she knew. And those eyes hadn’t changed, she decided. They were same happy blue that the two had always shared.
For all the changes, he was still the brother she knew; he was still Mathias, now grown up into a fine man, one that was dependable and competent. His new job and title alone proved that much. It also served to let her realize just how stagnant her own growth truly was. What had she become in comparison? As far as she could tell, she was only the same girl who whispered to birds and wore flowers in her hair. To think she had worried about being unrecognizable. She could have mused on this for hours if she had the chance, but his voice broke the silence and whisked her away from her thoughts. It was a simple enough greeting, and yet her brain didn’t quite process the words themselves. At first she only caught the warm tone, and the fact that is was her brother speaking to her once again.
“Welcome to your new home Mia.”
“Big Brother.” She couldn’t help but faintly smile when she spoke, hoping her voice came out loud enough to be heard. How could she best respond to him? A million words had run through her head since she left her parents’ home days ago, thousands of phrases and ideas for how to properly greet her brother after all this time. But now, none of them seemed to be of any use to her. Instead, it seemed the best idea to her was to rush forward to hug him close. That was something she had missed being able to do. “I’ve missed you so much!”

It had been years since he had last been to his old home, since he had last laid in the old bed that was a bit too hard and creaked every time he rolled over. It had been just as long since he had seen his mother and father, for they never had really approved of his joining the guard. But he was sure he at least had their approval now that he had made Jack. At least, it seemed they did if they entrusted their precious daughter to his care. He had missed her too, always one that could draw a smile across his lips, no matter the circumstances. He hoped that proved true here too. He knew that there was far too few reasons to smile around here.
Most of his worrying was brought to a stop as he saw her depart the carriage and recognize him. Sometimes he didn’t recognize himself in the mirror, much less expect anyone else to. But this was family, someone that would be able to recognize him no matter what. He recognized her for sure, the sun bright hair that shown next to the jewel red ornaments that decorated their locks, and the matching dress that he thought was perfect, but he was sure would pale next to those of the court. But that wasn’t the point; the point here being that she was here and he was to care for her, ensure that she learned and grew where she could not elsewhere.
“Big Brother. I’ve missed you so much!”
Holding her close when she rushed into his arms, he could only smile and chuckle at the greeting as he wrapped his arms around her and picked her up to swing her in a circle while hugging her tight. It was good to see her again, good to hear her voice. A little piece of home, a little piece of himself. He would protect her all he could, and hopefully find someone that could teach her enough to protect herself if she should need it, at least until help arrived.
“I’ve missed you too. Now, tell me all about your trip and tell me everything that’s been going on. I want to know anything you want me tell me Mia.”
He sat her down and moved to grab her bags, motioning for one of the staff members to grab what he could not. He wanted to learn about her now, to learn about the young lady that she had become in his absence.

Mia had missed his hugs so much. Even the little spin, it was as if nothing had changed over the years. “I’ve missed you too. Now, tell me all about your trip and tell me everything that’s been going on. I want to know anything you want me tell me Mia.”
“Oh, I don't know if I really have much to tell,” she said as she was set down. More accurately, she didn't know if she had anything that could compare to what stories he probably had. He had become Jack, and served as a guard before that. There was no doubt to her who had been leading the more exciting life. Still, maybe she could speak of a thing or two. Before she did so, however, she went to help grab her bags as well. It was a well intentioned action, one that she didn't give much thought to. Wasn't it good to be helpful to those around her? But, the odd look a servant gave her when she did so was enough to indicate it wasn't so simple as that. All the same, she held onto the heavy bag she had picked up. Big brother could help carry her things in, so couldn’t she, too? She just wanted to be helpful.
‘She's supposed to be a lady?’ She could hear muttered under someone’s breath, though she kept her eyes away from it’s source. ‘What lady does a servant’s work?’
‘Perhaps they really don’t teach proper etiquette in Clubs.’
She chose to ignore those whispers, and instead moved to stand by her brother. Unlike the rest of her family, she had been born in the Kingdom of Hearts. Did they not know that? And why should it ever matter if her brother had been born elsewhere? He had spent most of his life in this country, he faithfully served it and was even now the Jack. Did loyalty count for nothing in the face of heritage? Perhaps some thought so.
“Mother and Father are the same as they’ve always been,” Mia said, choosing to push the matter to the back of her mind. She wouldn’t let some whispered opinions ruin today. “Father’s business is still going well, and Mother’s taught me embroidery and some sewing. So, things at home have been going well enough, but… it was never the same without you there.” She offered a little laugh, as if to try to downplay the statement, but she meant it all the same. Home had never truly been home without him there to make things bright.
“Ah, um, the village hasn’t changed much either. Most of the same families are still there, as are their sons.” She made a face, even if she didn’t quite realize it. Truly, she couldn’t always understand their overt ‘kindness,’ a thing which had only worsened when word got out she was now the sister to a Jack. “Mostly, I just keep to the birds. I like their company.”

“Oh, I don't know if I really have much to tell,”
Mathias just smiled at her and let her continue. He would listen to any stories that she would tell him, even the dull ones. It had been so long since he had been home and seen everyone that he was willing to hold on to any piece of information that she had, even if mother had been knitting stockings for the animals. All that he would do would be to hold that information close to his heart, happy to know that his parents were well and were still thriving.
Perhaps they really don’t teach proper etiquette in Clubs.’
He was used to these whispers, he had dealt with them long enough and they had eventually stopped, especially when he had shown his skin and why he had earned his place. But he knew he would need to tell her to ignore them too, that is was just people being closed minded and just trying to start trouble, to prove how much better they were just because they were born into the court life. But he kept his smile up and moved to wrap one arm around her, squeezing her shoulder lightly. Once they were both settled in and she was installed into the castle proper, he would begin teaching her what she needed to know, to find a tutor for her. There was so much to do for her, but right now, he just wanted to spend time with his sister and tell her to ignore the people that didn’t matter to her. “Mother and Father are the same as they’ve always been, Father’s business is still going well, and Mother’s taught me embroidery and some sewing. So, things at home have been going well enough, but… it was never the same without you there.”
He frowned at that. Really, he didn’t want to leave her alone, but he had to make his way in the world. He could feel himself stagnating there, not letting himself grow into what he needed to be. Perhaps if they had stayed in clubs, he would have joined the guard there, but since they were here, in Hearts, he did it here and earned himself a very good position and some trustworthy coworkers in the process. By this point they were outside of the room that had been set aside for her and he motioned for the guards to put her stuff down, that he would take care of the rest of moving her in. Unlocking the door, he motioned for her to go inside, slipping all her stuff in after her. There was a decent amount of clothing, but he knew that most of it would be replaced within the week and some of it would go toward the rag pile that the servants kept for keeping things clean.
“Ah, um, the village hasn’t changed much either. Most of the same families are still there, as are their sons. Mostly, I just keep to the birds. I like their company.”
“I didn’t want to leave you alone… that was not my intention in leaving… I had to make my own way, you know? I felt… closed off at home, like I was slowly being smothered in that small village. My talents were going to waste… but I’m glad that you are hear with me now. And… those boys need to learn a lot of things themselves, but … honestly, so do a lot of the younger courtiers here too. But I’m sure you’ll make more friends here… And ignore what the people say about clubs and about any of our behavior that they say is odd… They’re just not used to us and they think they’re better since they were born here and have always been here. There will be a few your age that you can bond with I’m sure… and we do have plenty of birds here, they love the garden.”
He smiled with that and moved to hug her close, hoping that this could be a new start for her as it was for him.
