It felt so good to be home, Kiku smiled as he handed over the reins of his horse to the fresh-faced steward, eying the castle over. The prince of course was whisked away by his relieved parents and adoring subjects while the surviving soldiers dispersed, eager for the familiar faces of family and friends. Kiku scanned the crowds, adjusting his grip on the makeshift cane. He had survived the majority of their campaign unscathed, but the last battle saw him catch an arrow to his thigh. In the heat of it, it had barely registered, his focus was on keeping Ludwig safe. It was only afterwards, when the battle had been won and the danger passed that the pain became apparent. The shaft of the arrow fractured in the battle and it took the field surgeon quite some time to fish out the arrowhead from his leg. As a result of it, the leg ached more than other injuries he’d experienced in the past, but he wasn’t interested in broadcasting that fact. Ludwig was worried enough about him, he didn’t need to give him any other reason to worry. Kiku’s job was to be a shield for the rising king, if he didn’t prove that he could be a dependable asset to the kingdom, he had no future. The men he’d served with all had a life to go back to, families and careers, plans for their lives once the conflict ended.
Kiku watched them go with a small amount of envy. His family remained remote, isolated in a village far from the kingdom, and he doubted that any of them would make the trip. And with Ludwig spirited away by his duties as sovereign, there was only one other person who would be looking for him.
He saw Feli before the man saw him and it was hard not to smile at the sight of him. Feli had always been the optimist, the constant source of cheer and energy the warmed their little trio of friends. Feli had always been a soothing constant in his life, the one person that seemed to see Kiku as anything other than a shield, as a tool to protect the royal line. To see the man waiting for him was the first time Kiku truly felt like he was home.
Kiku limped over to the man, a gentle look in his face. “Feliciano, it’s been too long,” he said, resting his free hand on the young man’s shoulder. “I hope you’ve been well while we’ve gone. “
He was formal, Feli always made fun of that aspect of Kiku's, but he had no idea how to be anyone else.
